He is a well-remembered figure in Japanese history for his travels in the Western world, his role as a Protestant missionary leader, and as a founder of Doshisha University.

Niijima was born in the Annaka domain as the eldest son and heir to a samurai family (Aleksandra Majstorac-Kobiljski, “Learning to be Modern: American Missionary Colleges in Beirut and Kyoto 1860-1920,” PhD diss., The City University of New York, 2010, 70).
At a young age, Niijima showed a keen interest in foreign customs and teachings; he dreamed of exploring the world outside Japan. In 1863, he left the country illegally as a stowaway and ended up in Massachusetts. Under the care of a generous benefactor, Alpheus Hardy, he was baptized and educated at Andover, followed by Amherst.
