  • Tuskegee Airman Rusty Burns shares World War II stories, tales of triumph over discrimination

Sitting in front of a mural depicting the Tuskegee Airmen — including himself — in the European Hanger of the Palm Springs Air Museum, Rusty Burns fielded questions from the assembled group of kids, tourists and military aviation buffs.

One asked about other Tuskegee Airmen and whether Burns had known them.

Another simply asked to hear more of his World War II stories. Then one kid hit him with the hard question: what was his favorite plane to fly?

“That’s a great question and the answer is all of them,” he said. “But if I had to choose, it’s the P”

Burns, a Coachella Valley resident, shared his stories as well as those of fellow Tuskegee Airmen, many of whom have now died, along with a general overview of the program that trained the American military’s first black pilots at an educational workshop Wednesday.
